ABOUT US

BRCAn’t Stop Me

 

Mission Statement: To raise awareness of the BRCA gene mutation among young adults and to

provide support for young adults who have or are affected by the BRCA gene mutation.

 

Vision: To expand BRCAn’t Stop Me to universities throughout the state of Michigan and throughout the nation.

 

BRCAn’t Stop Me aims to:

  • raise awareness of the BRCA gene mutation among young adults

  • help affected students become more proactive about their increased risk of cancer

  • support those who have or are affected by the BRCA gene mutation

  • provide information about genetic counseling

 

Membership is open to students with a BRCA gene mutation, students who do not have a gene mutation but have family members with an inherited cancer or risk of cancer, and or individuals who support BRCAn’t Stop Me’s mission.

 

The group hosts and participates in activities throughout the year, including:

  • Zumba for a Cure, BRCA’nt Stop Me’s annual fundraiser for hereditary cancer research and Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered (FORCE)

  • Pink and Blue Pumpkin Sale, which raises awareness of male and female breast cancer

  • Swing in Pink and Move to the Beat, a swing dance and exercise movement event

  • Turn the Town Teal (Ovarian Cancer National Alliance)

  • Susan G. Komen Walk

  • Shake Your Tail Feather Teal (Michigan Ovarian Cancer Alliance)

  • Making Strides Against Breast Cancer (American Cancer Society)

  • Genetic Counselor Seminar

 

Meetings are held at least twice a month to plan events, support members, and discuss topics such as: genetic counseling and testing, insurance policies, cancer risks due to the BRCA gene mutation, early detection methods, preventative measures, new research findings about the BRCA gene mutation, and more.
